  • Boomstar Modular 3003 Filter

The 3003 filter is a voltage controlled, discrete analog 18 db/oct ladder low-pass filter, employing hand-matched transistors. Drop the FREQUENCY knob to 0 and things get pretty dull; swing it back up and those "Transistor Bass” highs come crashing through the gate. The 3003’s RESONANCE circuit at max will sing out more than the TB’s signature chirping in a fun, bubbly, if washy, poorer relation, Mini “clone-ish" way; use it tastefully, or throw moderation to the wind for overwhelming chirp force. • Boomstar Modular 4075 Filter

The 4075 filter is a voltage controlled, discrete analog, 24/db/oct cascaded transconductance low-pass filter, employing hand-matched transistors. In its lowest FREQUENCY setting it shaves off higher frequency harmonics; its RESONANCE or “Q” circuit pushes those harmonics past the self-oscillation boiling point, projecting a thumpy, thrashing squeal, with explosive low to mid-range power and depth. The design is actually pulled from the four-pole ARP 4072 (better: more parts and trims), sans the 12kHz design flaw which hamstrung the original’s high end. More Information.

  • Boomstar Modular 5089 Filter

The 5089 filter is a voltage controlled, discrete analog, 24 db/oct transistor ladder, low-pass filter, employing hand-matched transistors. Our ladder low-pass filter—a subtractive analog sound synthesis foundation—in its lowest FREQUENCY setting removes, or cuts off higher frequency harmonics; its RESONANCE or Q circuit emphasizes those harmonics to the point of “squealy,” giddy self-oscillation, tracking the keyboard in its FULL setting quite nicely if seeking an alternative sine wave. • Boomstar Modular 8106 Filter
    Boomstar Modular 8106 Filter
Designer Tim Caswell: "The 8106 is a 6db/oct hi-pass filter followed by a recreation of the Roland® IR3109 module, which is a 4 pole, 24 db/oct voltage controlled lowpass filter with voltage controlled resonance. Three dual OTAs with similar topology to the BA662 used in the Jupiter 8 (and the IR3109 module) were employed, one amp for the hi-pass filter, four (with added buffers) for the low-pass, and one for the resonance. This filter takes a wide range of input signals, and tracks control voltage extremely well. Tap points are available for 6db, 12db, and 18db/oct. Although the topology is similar to the 4075, the tonality, especially when overdriven, is distinct..."

  • Boomstar Modular SE88
    Boomstar Modular SE88 Filter

Our version of the boxy, Blade Runner-sweet and Boomstar-brash dual mode CS80 filter, initially married to the Omega Series Synths, and then tucked-in the 'Stars, now joins the Modstar Collective. We've twisted and turned the SE88 to unflatten the earth, so to speak; the original CS80 fed a HP filter into a LP filter, but with the SE88 your can select MODE 1's HP or BP to feed MODE 2's LP or BP, or patch it to reverse that pleasant path. The audio signal is completely controllable with input and output levels for each filter. Cherish and respect your filter's input gain stages, for a smooth yet often brassy sound—shed your mercy to strike hard for boiling, snarling bite, even to the blackout/cutout point; then and only then, uniquely blend mode settings for the filter family values you revere.

  • Boomstar Modular SEM Filter

Our SEM is known as a 'Voltage Controlled State Variable Filter' because it provides simultaneous high pass, low pass, and band pass outputs, all with a 12 dB/oct slope. The notch is the inverse of the bandpass, achieved by summing the Low Pass and high pass outputs. This version is a combination of the original SEM filter and the newer design from the OBX, along with improvements by SE. More Information.

  • Studio Electronics Ext Box
    Ext Box (Ext Box)
Designed specifically for the SE-02, the Ext Box is a multi-function external controller, offering high CV resolution filter frequency control with a full-sized knob. It also features an 1/8" to 1/4" connection converter for External Input and Audio Out. A drive-adjustable hi-pass filter with attenuation, rich overdrive and extremely potent boost, add rich character and depth, while expanded external input control, expressive gate triggering for external signal/sample manipulation, expand and inspire; let it breathe new life and fire into your SE-02.

And what the Ext Box does for the SE-02, it can for many desktop synths and modules which offer some combination of External Input control, CV, Gate, and VCF CV connections; we recommend our Boomstar and Boomstar Modular Eurorack modules—especially the Tonestar.

Due to overwhelming demand, new orders—as of 9.20.18—now shipping 10.1.18.

    Highlights Include:

    • Variable high-pass filter with drive control, for severe distortion and gain boost with on/off switch

    • Interface to 1/4 connection world: external input, audio output

    • Secondary CV input

    • Filter CV source switch: knob or secondary source selection—such as your modular

    • 3 gate options: fixed gate switch, momentary gate switch (transformer), external gate input

    • Large filter control knob for smooth or sharp highly articulated sweeps

    • Back panel 1/8"-1/4" connections: 1/8” and 1/4" inputs; 1/8” and 1/4” outputs

    • Din interconnect: Output, Ext Input, VCF CV, Gate (cable included)

    MINI FAQ

Will the changes on the EXT BOX affect the SE USB audio output? I also use USB but not for DAW but for audio and midi with my MX-1?

Two takes on the Ext Box USB/analog Audio Out skinny:

    Marc St. Regis

The SE-02 produces analog and USB audio simultaneously, and as a result, with the Ext Box is connected, the SE-02's analog signal, passing through the Ext Box's drive/hi-pass circuits, will continue through to the Ext Box's audio output. To clarify, the 12dB (6dB slope) drive/hi-pass audio path, sourced from the SE-02 and/or the External Input, is analog and passes only to the Ext Box audio output (1/8" and 1/4"). The frequency CV and gate are very high resolution digital controls, and affect the USB and analog audio. The Ext Box allows very smooth filter frequency manipulation (VCF Cutoff), expanded gate functionality, and external input processing to pass back to USB audio: plenty there for the for USB-only audio enthusiasts to discover, without the benefit of the Drive and Hi Pass filter in the mix, which of course is nevertheless always outputted.

    Tim Caswell

The Xbox will affect the VCF Cutoff, the External Input, and the Gate in the USB output. The Hi Pass and Overdrive will not be heard thru the USB connection, only the 1/8 and 1/4" outputs of the EXT Box.
